Jesse Stone

Ahmet Ertegün, founder of Atlantic Records, once stated that "Jesse Stone did more to develop the basic rock 'n' roll sound than anybody else."

Stone's (who sometimes wrote as Calhoune) songs were made famous by the likes of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, the Swinging Blue Jeans, Billy Swan, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and Canned Heat.

Besides his many hits, Stone was a bandleader playing at the Cotton Club, and leading the Apollo Orchestra. His own band included Coleman Hawkins, and then worked with Duke Ellington and Jimmie Lunceford's orchestras.

In many ways Stone's greatest influence probably came while working as a songwriter and arranger at Atlantic Record, before starting his own publishing company.
